Listen
As you listen to various studio projects, you'll
notice that just as each song has it's own flavor, so each production style is correspondingly unique.
Decades of experience in sound design have
afforded me many tools {conceptual and technical}
for sculpting the soundscape of each song in a manner consistent with it's intended emotional impact.
The song informs how it should be recorded, how it should be mixed, and what provisions are necessary to finalized the arrangements without getting painted into a corner (actually, I do that part).
Recording 'dry' sound is helpful for the mix, but
does nothing to benefit the recording performer.
Therefore I carefully provide relevent ambient treatments
(to the monitors) to position your sound within the song so it
is both aesthetically pleasing as well as useful for monitoring.
This tends to produce a more inspired performance.
If you sound dry, overly distinct or even too loud,
a performance can become timid or self conciousness.
